Yahoo and China: Another Update
Those following the claims by Yahoo officials that they have no choice but to do what the Chinese government wants them to do might remember, back in 2000, how strongly the company fought against what it considered meddling by the French govenment. Nicholas Carr sure remembers and he has posted a well-informed "gotcha."

At least in the Shi Tao case, Yahoo! Holdings (Hong Kong) turned over information to the PRC which it was not required to turn over under Hong Kong law. It looks like Yahoo is not just complying with local laws.
(Of course, given the relative youth and healthful habits of US IT CEOs, combined with the rate that the USA is transferring its capital to the PRC via the trade deficit, most of those CEOs will probably be reporting to boards in the PRC before they retire. Might as well start forming the right habits now.)
