We don’t usually do radar posts about companies looking to hire — after all, everyone’s looking for great engineers — but I decided to make an exception. I met recently with Neeru Khosla and Murugan Pal of CK-12.org, a non-profit that is building K-12 open source textbooks. I like their vision. Unlike some of the other open textbook initiatives, they are focused on the need for textbooks in the lower and middle grades, and they have some good ideas about how to develop an approved curriculum that has a chance of actually being adopted.
They’re also using some XML workflow that looks very similar to the tools we use in our own book production process, and we’re exploring how to share our internal tools with their project. They’re off to a great start, and unlike many non-profits, they actually have funding, so a large part of their energy isn’t devoted to the hamster-cage of fundraising. But they need developers.
