Last Chance For the Web 2.0 Expo Launchpad and a Peek at the Schedule

The Web 2.0 Expo is just a couple of months away. This year we are returning with sessions on Mobile, Social Platforms, Development, WebOps, Marketing, Business, and Design.

The Launchpad for the Web 2.0 Expo closes tonight at Midnight. If you’ve got a new product or site that you’re going to launch in April submit it for consideration. John Battelle and I will be hosting the event.

The schedule has also really taken shape. Some of the talks that I am looking forward to include:

User-Generated Censorship – Annalee Newitz (io9)User-generated censorship is what happens when crowds on social media networks flag content as “inappropriate” and get it removed or hidden. This represents a break with traditional top-down censorship. But is user-generated censorship an improvement, or worse than Big Brother? We’ll find out by looking at examples from Flickr, YouTube, Craiglist, and more.

Even Faster Web Sites – Steve Souders (Google)Steve’s book High Performance Web Sites describes the 14 best practices he developed while working as the Chief Performance Yahoo!. YSlow, the Firebug extension he created, codified those best practices. Now working at Google, Steve discusses the next set of best practices he’s discovered, including the best ways to load JavaScript and where to place (and where not to place) inline scripts.

How to Innovate on Time – Scott Berkun (Berkun Consulting)Two of the most difficult things in the universe are delivering complex work on time and developing innovative ideas that solve real problems. As a sure sign of our collective insanity, many of us willingly attempt both at the same time. This fun, interactive workshop explores different approaches for managing innovation on a schedule.

Building a Search Engine in a Web 2.0 World – Simon Wistow (Six Apart)You’ve created a start-up, it got popular and suddenly you have several million users who can’t remember what they wrote or how to find it. How do you build a credible search engine for them?

Adding “Where” to Mobile and Web Applications – Ryan Sarver (Skyhook Wireless) Location-aware web sites, applications, and devices can provide users with rich social connectivity, useful content, and more. This session is about the tools available to bring location to your web site or mobile applications.

The “How” of OAuth – Scott Fleckenstein (Get Satisfaction)Do you want users to share their content from your web site? OAuth can help. OAuth is an emerging community standard that enables authentication between apps. After a brief introduction and explanation of why you should implement it, Fleckenstein will jump into the steps needed to implement OAuth into your application.
