The recent terror attack at the Boston Marathon prompted the Guardian’s Simon Rogers (who will soon be Twitter’s Simon Rogers) to look into the history of attacks on U.S. soil. Using data from the START Global Terrorism Database, Rogers mapped every recorded terrorist incident in the U.S. from 1970 to 2011.
Clicking “play” on the bottom left starts an animation beginning with attacks in 1970 and fills the map through 2011. Users also can zoom in and click on a dot to pull up attack information on the city, the date, the group responsible, who their target was, and how many people were injured or killed:
The data used in the map can be accessed via request to the Global Terrorism team, and Rogers notes more current data on terror attacks will be released soon.
