Where 2.0: A9's new interface
At Where 2.0 this morning, A9 CEO Udi Manber unveiled a new maps visual Yellow Pages interface. Love the way the two sides of the street scroll in different directions.

The two-direction scroll is a little weird - what about a rear-view mirror metaphor? Have the "behind you" row smaller and in reverse. Scrolling would move in the correct direction, which I think is pretty important.
He didn't show whether it was possible to turn corners, which would be *awesome*.
Ahh, I see. I had to search for pizza near 90120 to see it. Searching for pizza in my area only brought up a static map with the locations placed on it.
My favorite thing about the demo was how wierd the images look when you're on a hill. The camera is parallel to the street. On a steep hill, it looks like the buildings are angled into the street -- and in fact, they are! But when you walk, your brain does "error correction". So cool the way the A9 photos help us to understand the "Mind Hack" that our brains use to "correct" the vertical/horizontal plane in our vision. When looking at photos, the error correction doesn't kick in. (The only time I've seen this effect in the physical world was in Hong Kong, where the buildings grow vertically out of very steep hils, emphasizing the angle between the building and the ground. It was so steep that my mind just couldn't correct.)
map.a9.com seems to have been redirected too. They're obviously still keeping this one from the great unwashed.
