Maplib: Use GMaps Controls For Viewing Big Pictures
Maplib.net is a site that allows anyone to use Google's maps controls to view a large picture. It's simple to use. Just upload a picture, and then you can view your own version of Middle Earth. Very handy for handling large pictures. Similar work has been done with MS's MapCruncher.

It's worth noting that Google's own Picasa Web Albums has a maps-like mode for panning around uploaded images at full resolution. (It only has one zoom level, though, presumably for simplicity's sake.)
