Teach the Wiki Way

At various times I have had to explain what a wiki is to people and I rarely do a good job. In the future I may just show them Lee & Sachi LeFever's video Wikis in Plain English. It does a really good job of explaining why and how someone would want to use a wiki, and of keeping the vocabulary on the easily-understood side of tech. If you ever need to explain RSS they have a video for that too.

Thanks for the the link...great information for users. Will link to it myself.

Great link. I'd also recommend people check out wikipatterns (http://www.wikipatterns.com), which takes the education a step further from "what is a wiki?" to "how do we manage it and increase adoption?"

This is an awesome video. I do think the audience is narrowing rapidly for this treatment -- camping trips. What is sorely needed is Step 2 What's a Wiki: how do organizations really use them. Or how do they get started? Or what business problems do they solve? But I _love_ this Primer. Thx Jeffrey www.radiowalker.com

What makes this video really good is that the explanation is tied to an example. I've tried both ways of explaining a wiki - just describing what it is, and describing how it can be used, and people respond much better to the latter.

This is a great primer. Edit - Write - Save

Great concepts to get across but care needs to be taken that a person understand that these are concepts and the mechanics can be different with the many wiki software availalbe.

I agree with Mark. My thought is that wiki's themselves should help with the groundrules and how to find what is on the wiki. Too many exist in disconnected, context-less space. But that is maybe for the "Finding Your Way Around Wikis" level.

I'm working on a new wiki based project and its a nightmare explaining wiki to anyone that doesn't get it! If your into wiki then its worth cheking out www.wherearethejoneses.com - its a new daily comedy sitcom that uses wiki to generate the next episode. The audience/community can upload scipts, storlines, new chacraters, locations etc. Would love to know your thoughts so check it out www.wherearethejoneses.com

This is brilliant! My students will get a kick out of this...and my relatives might even be able to understand it! Thanks!

I was wondering what some of the more mature members here do about dating. It seems much harder for older singles to find a mate, so I might be turning to online dating for older singles.
any suggestions? thanks.
