Web2Summit: Booking Charter Flights from Your Browser
Just when you thought you’d seen every last marketplace people could cook up to exploit the Web, along comes Virgin Charter. It doesn’t launch until February, but CEO Scott Duffy gave a brief, intriguing presentation this morning.
Here’s the bullet point that made me take notice: while commercial aviation involves easy booking and lousy flight experiences, private aviation is just the opposite—booking is a big hassle, but people love the flights. Add to that the very long tail of small charter companies--not to mention the high net-worth individuals who’d use the service--and you start to smell good old-fashioned Web opportunity.

I have been tracking this company since I first heard about it earlier in the year. I am a pilot and think this is as good an opportunity as it gets. I ran into their CTO Ron Garret last year before Virgin came on board. Back then Virgin Charter was still being incubated by a venture capital firm that Garret is a partner of. Judging by the press releases, Virgin Charter has come a long way since then and is getting some decent traction with the operators.
