Release 1.0 Back Issues

Esther Dyson edited Release 1.0 from 1983 to November 2006, when O'Reilly acquired the newsletter and updated it to Release 2.0. It is our great pleasure to offer, free of charge, electronic versions of all back issues of Release 1.0.

Each issue offers insights into a topic just before it went mainstream. The first issue under Esther's ownership (she bought and renamed the Rosen Electronics Newsletter in March 1983) looked at VRTX, the new operating system for 16-bit embedded computers; noted that, for the first time, the majority of papers at the International Solid State Circuits Conference were written by people outside the US and warned of declining American R&D, engineering education, and test scores; and analyzed three promising new companies that had just gone public--Fortune Systems, TeleVideo, and Victor Technologies.

Taken as a group, these back issues offer a fascinating record of the evolution of computer technology spanning nearly a quarter century. Download a few and take a trip back through time.
