Trapping content on the iPad won't work, even if it's pretty
Wired's latest iPad demo looks great, but the app doesn't want you to leave
Wired is leading the magazine-to-iPad charge with a great looking app, but it's also reverting to some back lock-in habits. Instead of trapping content and readers within a space — a true exercise in futility — Wired and other publishers should go the other way with their iPad offerings: create more web hooks, not less.
To be free, information has to be smart (comments on Chris Anderson's "Free!")
WIRED Magazine’s editor in chief Chris Anderson, following up on the
popularity of his
Long Tail
meme, theorizes in the
March 2008 issue of WIRED about the modern
tendency to put information online at no cost.
I think this is highly volatile and that the phenomenon will be driven
in very different ways from his six models. “Free as in freedom” may
ultimately triumph. Furthermore, professional quality doesn’t come for
free, so projects and industries have to find ways to fund it.
