My favorite use of Backpack

You've probably heard about Backpack already, and it's very much worth checking out. I've been testing it for a few weeks now, and I wound up with a work pattern for it that seems worth documenting.

Backpack will send you the contents of any page as email, and will accept email to any page as a way of adding to it. The format of the email containing a page's contents is exactly the same as the format it accepts to add to a page. In other words, email is a round-trip format for Backpack content: Backpack -> Email -> Backpack.

Since I use my Treo 650 as a laptop wherever I go, Backpack has become the equivalent of a source control system for my writing. Before I leave in the morning, I send myself the content of my pages. While I'm on the subway or waiting in a movie line, I edit the text and give it a new title ("CodeZoo 2.0 rev. 4") and then send it right back to Backpack. At the end of the day I delete the stale versions.

This is a fantastic way to work. It doesn't matter where I am, nor whether I have a network connection, nor what sort of device is nearby, nor what application set is installed on that device. If I can get a Web browser, I can edit; if I can get my email, I can edit. It's like a Blackberry for my whole desktop.

I'd love it if I could send an email to Backpack requesting the content of a named page (that is, a "checkout"), and I'd love it if I could replace the contents of a given note or list with contents of an email (a "checkin"). I'd also prefer that the email address for a page be mnemonic (currently, the addresses are Flickr-style random words), though I recognize that would raise a security problem. But those are jimmies on the ice cream. The breakthrough is the ease with which this pattern has fit itself into my life. Congrats to 37signals on another great app.

This is great! Thanks for detailing your workflow with Backpack. I've been diddling around with it for a couple of days, but haven't had any real breakthroughs--this is a great start!

I have been working with this now for a few days. And I have made some great strides in managing work flow and keeping track of all the stuff in my head. My main page functions as a web desktop with each page being a specific area of life, topic, project, or idea. I would like to see as a feature update Tada list style integration into each page. It should also have a spell check feature (but my firefox extension helps with this). Auto generation of HTML would be nice as would RSS feeds. The sending email to this page should allow me to generate my own email. Overall this is a great product and they have my $5 this month.

I use a T-Mobile Sidekick and except for some of the more dynamic content editing I can do almost everything without having to edit the code and repost. I am curious as to how PockePC users have been fairing.

Hi Jason,

Backpack does indeed have taDa list-like functionalilty on each page. Just click the List button on any page, make a list, check it twice, ...

"Auto-generation of HTML"? By this I'm assuming you mean the ability to write in the body of the page without need of adding your own HTML tags. You can actually use Textile wiki-style markup in your writing. There's a link to "Text Formatting" at the bottom of every page; I missed it at first too.

With RSS feeds of notes or list items per page you'd actually be able to use Backpack as a blogging app ;-)

"The format of the email containing a page's contents is exactly the same as the format it accepts to add to a page. "

I'm a little confused on this -- when I send myself the page on backpack, yes, I can edit the text and send it back to myself, but it just shows up as a new email message on the page.

Are you suggesting that on your treo, it looks just like the web page and when you email it back, your web page is updated?

Am I missing something here? Is there a setting where email should be sent as HTML?

Hi Jerry,

Check this out in Backpackit help : http://backpackit.com/weblog/archives/tips_tricks/pages_adding_content_to_a_page_via_email.php.

I had the same question as you and I am not sure id Marc does this, but the methid described for adding items to a list suits my needs perfectly.

Thanks Marc for your excellent tip. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks for the write up on how you use backpack. I have been playing with it since release a few days ago and I have to admit I don't think I get it... you have inspired me to keep going.

Might have to do with me being only on dialup this week :)

I'm a little confused as well.

Sending the whole email back to the backpack page adds it as an email. Sending a "note:" or "todo:" email adds a NEW note or todo, but this article seems to say that he's able to send the whole page to the site and have it show up; either as a new page (then he deletes the old one), or it makes whatever changes to the old that were made to the email.

Or does he make the changes himself based on the emails he sends to the page?

  Marc Hedlund [05.05.05 06:35 PM]

Sorry about the confusion.

After I make edits on the go, I send back (for instance) a "note:" email, with the subject line including an incremented version number (in other words, in the morning, I email myself version 3, and then email in version 4). When I get home, I delete the old version (version 3) of the note.

When I mentioned at the end that I'd like to be able to have a "checkin" method, what I mean is that I'd like to be able to replace the contents of version 3 with new text. As far as I know, I can't do that right now; nor can I create a new page from email, I believe.

I use my project management tool in a similar way. The difference is that my tool is also flexible and lets me view my to-dos in various ways. It's an awesome way to control everything I do and never forget anything.
