The Associated Press
reports on a patent filed by a Florida inventor for a steering wheel sensor that tests for blood alcohol through skin contact, and refuses to start the car if you're too drunk. The article points out that the auto industry will likely be resistant to such an invention. Nonetheless, we are surely approaching the age of smart objects. Embedded sensors will completely transform our experience of the manufactured world. (Via Slashdot and the Washington Post, but Google News reports this story in 192 total sources as of this morning.)

This is a good thing, since it will improve our quality of life. But it's also potentially a very bad thing -- even a dangerous thing -- when on considers privacy and freedom.
The code in these devices needs to be open source, for the protection of the people who will be forced to use the smart devices. To me, this is one of the most important reasons to support the open source movement. In the future, code will be the law (see "Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace").
