Where 2.0: PlaceSite

Sean Savage will be at Where 2.0, talking about PlaceSite. PlaceSite forms communities around wifi hotspots and just went live with their first site in Berkeley. He’ll give a 5m lightning talk about PlaceSite on Wednesday and participate in the Social Mobile panel on Thursday.

Sean’s articulate and very interesting on the subject of social applications around this mobile technology. You might have heard of him before: he ran the blog that was the go-to place for flashmobbing back when flashmobbing was the latest and greatest. I’m intrigued by the idea of communities around wifi hotspots: I’m sure that Sean’s best ideas will be immediately knocked off by Cingular, T-Mobile, and the other pay-fi services, so it’ll be good to get a glimpse of what I’ll be in for when I use a hotel’s wifi service in 2007.

On the subject, if you stay at a Wyndham (e.g., for a conference), join their ByRequest program and get your wifi for free. It always galls me when I’m paying a hundred-and-way-too-much for the hotel room a night only to be stiffed $10/day on the wifi, when every Holiday Inn has free wifi. I’m still trying to figure out how not to register with my own name and personal information. “Saddam Jong-Hitler” would like to join the Preferred Guest Program, and he will not be happy if you don’t turn down his sheets …
