The 21st Century Medieval City

Stewart Brand just sent out an invite to tonight’s Long Now seminar:

“Many of us fancy living in adventurous late-medieval Europe, when cities and civilization were being reinvented. One billion people are doing that now in the world’s squatter cities, with two billion more coming.

Rob Neuwirth, author of SHADOW CITIES, has lived among them and has studied the hidden history of self-organized, self-constructed shanty-towns all the way back in time. They are where urbanity takes root.

“The 21st-century Medieval City,” Robert Neuwirth, 7pm (doors open), tonight, Friday, June 10, Fort Mason Conference Center, San Francisco. The lecture starts promptly at 7:30pm. Admission is free ($10 donation very welcome, not required).

This is one of a monthly series of Seminars About Long-term Thinking, given every second Friday at Fort Mason, organized by The Long Now Foundation. The next speaker in the series is Jared
Diamond, on July 15. If you would like to be notified by email of forthcoming talks, please contact Simone Davalos— simone AT longnow.org, 415-561-6582.
