MySpace Launching Music Label

by @gnat  | Comments: 6 4 November 2005

I pointed to the Wired article on how MySpace generates hits. Now MySpace has announced they'll launch their own music label (in collaboration with Interscope Records who have Jimmy Eat World and 50 cent on their roster). They are targeting the independent and unsigned artists whom MySpace can make into stars, as well as compilations of music from established artists. "MySpace Records: Volume I" will be a compilation of MySpace users' most popular tracks, and will be on stands November 15. It will be interesting to see whether they use their "teens who like X also like Y" knowledge to build kick-ass compilations. They've also signed their first artist, Hollywood Undead.

It will also be interesting to see if people will be willing to fund Murdoch's News Corp with their music purchases. How many kids know that MySpace is owned by the same person who brought the world the plague of Fox News?

And how long until the word gets out?

How many people (kids or adults) are that savvy with their purchasing dollars? And, if the Web 2.0 panel is anything to go by, kids aren't funding anybody with their music purchases--they're getting it all from BitTorrent and similar services.
