John Maeda’s top 5

When former RISD president John Maeda, now design partner at VC firm Kleiner Perkins, was asked to name 5 things he can’t live without, his list didn’t include many “things.” Declaring himself a “post-possessionista,” he explains why some of his favorite things are more concept than object.

Quote of the week

“Your work is much bigger than the current project. Your work is to cultivate your craft, and that craft goes beyond the screen. Get your head into the real world and enjoy life around you. Don’t be so narrow. Indulge your curiosity, and cultivate broad pursuits.” — Josh Clark, from The Pastry Box Project.

It’s not about the gadgets

The Internet of Things means more than smart toothbrushes and fitness bands; it’s about the systems — complex, crucial systems like health care and transportation. The novelty of smart devices distracts attention from the big picture, causing Silicon Valley to seriously underestimate the impact of the IoT, says Tim O’Reilly in this VentureBeat interview.
