In the wake of recent building collapses, the BBC addressed the question of what goes into the rescue efforts by creating an interactive guide outlining how rescuers approach a collapsed building.
Using information from the International Rescue Corps, the BBC highlighted the various methods used in rescue efforts, from mining local knowledge of a building and its inhabitants from nearby residents to employing tactics such as dog teams and thermal imaging to knowing when to end the rescue efforts.
